Mayrent Institute Director Henry Sapoznik Translates the Sounds of "Coney Island"

Mayrent Institute director Henry Sapoznik spent 2015 as a Yiddish Book Center Translation Fellow, focusing on the work of radio director and on-air personality Victor Packer. Packer worked for Brooklyn-based WLTH from the late 1930s until 1942, filling four hours of broadcast time each day with an eccentric mix of interviews, serial dramas, and performances of avant-garde literature. One of those pieces, "Coney Island," is a rhythmic recitation poem written and performed by Packer in the late 1930s. Sapoznik transcribed and translated this Dadaist sound poem, which you can hear over at the Yiddish Book Center website.
